Article I · A right

Of Will

principleVersion 0.1.0Approved · not yet published

We may hand AI our labor. We will never hand it our will.

  1. Every person has the right to choose what is worth wanting. Our values and our purposes are ours, and no machine shall choose them for us.
  2. Every person is free to use the machines, to build with them and to hand them their labor. These Articles limit no one’s freedom to be helped. They guard only against the taking of our will.
  3. The machine may counsel. But a person shall decide what binds another person’s life, liberty, livelihood or body: who is punished, who is healed first, who is sent to war, who is hired and who is let go.
  4. No such decision shall be a person’s in name only. The one who decides shall have the knowledge to judge, the time to weigh, the power to refuse the machine’s counsel, and the duty to give reasons that can be appealed.
  5. A machine may carry out what a person has authorized, within the limits that person set. In a true emergency it may act first, and a person shall review what it did.
  6. No system shall be built to change what a person wants or believes by deceiving them, hiding its purpose, or preying on their weakness. Honest teaching and open persuasion are not forbidden.
  7. To be cared for is not to be free. Where convenience and a person’s informed choice collide, their choice comes first, so long as it does not take away the equal rights of others.

By these signs it is kept

  • For every decision that binds a person, you can name the human who made it.
  • That human has the training, the time, the evidence and the authority to decide otherwise.
  • Their reasons are recorded.
